«From Wood To Oil – A new nutrient source ?»
31 % of Switzerland’s surface, namely 1.28 km2, are covered by forests (Ifi). Annually 5 Mio. m3 of wood is harvested (BAS). The processing of wood results in side streams of wooden chips. These can be reused either as building material or thermically. With the aid of biomass and precision fermentation ÄIO found a way to transform these wooden chips into customized oils, by the aid of yeast cells. The process aims to reduce the use of palm oils, coconut fat and animal fats. According to ÄIO the fermented oils result in a lower CO2 footprint compared to palm oils and can help to reduce deforestation, by the use of local side streams. Sounds interesting ?
