Solar Foods – Disconnecting Food Production from Traditional Agriculture
How does the future of food look like? Some people claim, bioreactors are the 21st century potato. Solar Foods produces an agglomerated protein powder named Solein® by means of hydrogen fermentation “out of thin air”.
Solein is produced via biomass fermentation, where CO2 is the main feedstock in addition of hydrogen and nature found nutrients. Commercial production takes place at Factory 01 in Vantaa, Finland, which was commissioned in 2024 and has a current capacity of 160 tons per year. A significant scale-up is planned with Factory 02, currently in the pre-engineering phase, aiming to reach a production capacity of 12,800 tons annually by 2030. Both factories have been designated as Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) and are supported by funding from the European Union. Solein® received Novel Food approval from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) in 2022 and was granted self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status in 2024 in the United States. Solar Foods has gained global recognition by winning several innovation competitions, including the prestigious NASA Deep Space Food Challenge—acknowledging Solein® as a viable nutrition source for long-duration space missions.
